Roberts Takes Action to Make Federal Health Reform Law Work to Greatest Benefit for Rhode Island Families and Businesses
Lt. Gov. Elizabeth H. Roberts will announce the formation of the "Healthy RI Implementation Task Force" in a meeting at 10:00 am today, Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation, 555 Valley Street, Providence, RI with heads of hospitals, health centers, physician groups, government agencies, business groups, and other important stakeholders in the state's health care community.
“I am forming the Healthy RI Implementation Task Force to make sure Rhode Island is proactive in implementing the federal health reform law. We must be ready to take advantage of the many opportunities in the law that are available to our state, as well as anticipate and address any challenges that will face our state as this law takes effect," said Lt. Governor Roberts. "The task force integrates all partners in Rhode Island's health care community in a coordinated way to make sure the work gets done to create the maximum benefit for Rhode Island families and businesses," explained the Lt. Governor.
The implementation task force comprises consumer advocates, business leaders, physicians, nurses and other health care providers, labor leaders, insurers, government agency leaders, legislators and other policy makers. At the meeting on Tuesday, invited stakeholders will be asked to serve on one of several issue-focused work groups to begin the task of identifying opportunities for Rhode Island in the federal law and preparing proposals for statewide implementation. The work groups include: insurance market reform and coverage expansion; developing a health insurance exchange for more Rhode Islanders to get affordable health insurance; making payment and delivery system reforms; and accessing federal funding for reforms.
