Interim Repairs to Huntington Viaduct to Require Temporary Closure of Portions of Troy Street in Providence

As part of interim repairs to the Huntington Avenue Viaduct Bridge in the City of Providence, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will temporarily close Troy Street southbound from Magnolia Street to Pilsudski Street. The Huntington Viaduct carries Route 6 (the Olneyville Expressway) over Troy and Westminster Streets, and Amtrak rail lines.

During the closure, anticipated to begin on Friday, April 19, 2013, RIDOT's recommended detour is as follows: From Troy Street, turn right onto Magnolia Street and follow to Atwood Street. Take Atwood Street to Plainfield Street and then turn left onto Bancroft Street. Follow Bancroft Street and turn left onto Magnolia Street. Once you reach Pilsudski Street, turn right and the detour will end. A detour map is available at www.dot.ri.gov/detourmaps.

"We apologize in advance for any inconveniences this temporary road closure will cause. However, it is a necessary step to help us expedite the interim repairs as quickly as possible," said RIDOT Director Michael P. Lewis.

Prior to the ultimate replacement of the Huntington Viaduct, RIDOT will shore up the current bridge to better ensure its integrity. Plans call for disposing of the existing shoring, and fabrication and installation of the new interim shoring and bracing. The work also will include repairing the beams and providing new roadway striping. It is anticipated that the interim repairs should wrap up by the end of July, and RIDOT will reopen Troy Street southbound.
