RIDOT Temporarily Lowers Posting of Narragansett's Great Island Bridge to Three Tons Effective This Afternoon

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is temporarily lowering the posting of the Great Island Bridge, connecting Galilee to Great Island in Narragansett, to three tons effective this afternoon. A recent inspection has shown increased deterioration of the timber deck.

By the end of the day, the bridge will have one-lane of alternating traffic to further protect its structural integrity until repairs can be made. Only passenger vehicles will be permitted to cross the bridge.

RIDOT is currently ordering materials, and crews will start repairs next week. It is anticipated that repairs will be completed within a week, allowing the posting limit to be raised to approximately ten tons, pending further evaluation of the bridge. The Great Island Bridge is scheduled to be replaced in 2014.
