ADVISORY: Financial Empowerment Training to Hit College Crusade Students, Families

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - General Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo, the Capital Good Fund and The College Crusade of Rhode Island are coming together on Tuesday, September 24, 2013, to teach the families of College Crusade students about the importance of managing their personal finances. College Crusade parents and family members will learn about budgeting and credit, and have the opportunity to sign-up for a free one-on-one session through the Rhode Island Financial Coaching Corps.

"I am excited to be working with The College Crusade of Rhode Island on ways to teach financial independence," Raimondo said. "By helping College Crusade students and their families feel empowered to make informed, responsible financial decisions, we are moving Rhode Island forward, one person at a time."

"This workshop with the Capital Good Fund kicks off our financial literacy program for the academic year," says Todd Flaherty, president & CEO of The College Crusade. "Our goal is to help our families understand the importance of being financially fit as they prepare for the expenses associated with the cost of college attendance. We want our families to know that even with limited resources they still can be empowered financially, and that with the right planning their child's dream of attending college is not out of reach."

The Financial Coaching Corps empowers Rhode Islanders to take charge of their finances. The goal of the Corps is to match volunteers with financial skills and know-how with people looking to learn how to make their money work for them.

"Something as simple as a budget can really change a family's life," said Capital Good Fund Founder and Executive Director Andy Posner. "Working with top-notch organizations like The College Crusade allows us to reach more families in need and magnify our impact."

The College Crusade of Rhode Island is a college-readiness and scholarship program for middle school and high school students in low-income urban communities. It enrolls students who attend public and public charter schools in Cranston, Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, and Woonsocket.
