Massachusetts Man Indicted for 2009 Murder of David Thomas and Domingo Ortiz in Providence Shooting

Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced that Superior Court Justice Robert D. Krause unsealed an indictment charging Nigel Nichols, DOB: 11/5/85, with a last known address of 85 Morton Village Drive, Mattapan, MA, with two counts of murder, three counts of discharging of a firearm while committing a crime of violence, one count of assault with intent to murder and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon.

A Providence County Grand Jury handed down a secret indictment on August 30, 2013. The indictment was unsealed today at the request of the Office of Attorney General.

It is alleged that in the early morning hours of December 6, 2009, Nichols discharged a .40 caliber firearm into a motor vehicle stopped at a traffic light on Dorrance Street outside the Garrahy Judicial Complex in Providence, striking and killing David Thomas and Domingo Ortiz and injuring Dwaynne Thomas.

Nichols is currently incarcerated at MCI Concord in Massachusetts on an unrelated case and will be arraigned in Rhode Island when he is discharged from the Massachusetts prison.

The Providence Police investigated the incident.
