Interim Report of the Statewide Grand Jury (Reported April 7)

Monchi Castillo-Cosme, DOB: 5/13/90 17 Montpelier Springfield, MA P1-2014-0995AG

The Statewide Grand Jury reported out an indictment charging Monchi Castillo-Cosme with one count of first degree robbery, one count of second degree robbery, one count of using a firearm while committing a crime of violence, two counts of conspiracy and one count of eluding police.

It is alleged that on or about January 4, 2014, Castillo-Cosme and an unindicted juvenile co-defendant committed a first degree robbery of a convenience store in Cranston and a second degree robbery of a convenience store in Coventry. After the robbery of the Coventry store, the defendants led police on a high speed chase before crashing their car in Warwick and fleeing into the woods. Castillo-Cosme was apprehended the following morning at a nearby Dunkin Donuts.

Several police departments were involved in the investigation including the Rhode Island State Police Detective Bureau and Uniform Division, Cranston Police Department, Coventry Police Department and the West Greenwich Police Department. Castillo-Cosme is scheduled to be arraigned in Providence County Superior Court before Justice Robert D. Krause on April 25, 2014.

Christopher Newsham, DOB: 8/16/76 547 Laurel Hill Avenue Cranston, RI P1-2004-0994A

The Statewide Grand Jury reported out a secret indictment charging Christopher Newsham with two counts of first degree child molestation.

It is alleged that on or about dates between August 15, 1991 and August 15, 1992, Newsham molested a person14 years of age or under. It is further alleged that on or about dates between March 6, 1995 and March 6, 1997, Newsham molested a second person 14 years of age or under.

The investigation was initiated on July 17, 2014 when a complaint was received by the Major Crimes Unit at State Police Headquarters.

A warrant was issued and on Friday, April 11th, 2014, members of the Rhode Island State Police Major Crimes Unit arrested Newsham. He was arraigned in Providence County Superior Court with bail set at $20,000 with surety. Newsham was ordered to have no contact with the victims. His next scheduled court appearance is on June 13, 2014 for a pre trial conference.
