Providence Man Sentenced to 30 Years for Breaking & Entering and Weapons Charges

Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced that Douglas Huntley (age 25), of Providence was sentenced yesterday to 30 years with 20 years to serve and the remainder suspended with probation for breaking and entering and weapons charges. Huntley was found guilty on October 30, 2015 by a Superior Court jury after a trial presided over by Superior Court Justice Robert D. Krause of several charges, including breaking and entering, possession of a firearm without a license, possession of a firearm having been previously convicted of a crime of violence, and possession of a controlled substance.

During the course of the trial, the State proved that on April 23, 2014, Huntley broke into the first floor residence of a house on Bergen Street in Providence. The residents upstairs heard noises coming from the apartment below and called police to report a possible break-in.

When Providence Police responded to the scene and entered the premises, they located Huntley crouched under a table in the kitchen holding a Colt .45 pistol.

"By quickly responding to the call, the patrol officers were able to apprehend a violent criminal in the act," said Attorney General Kilmartin. "This case is a great example of the excellent work that the Providence Police Department does each and every day in taking illegal guns off our streets."

Providence Police Patrol Officers Michael Gammino and Guiseppe Scarcello, with assistance from Detective Matthew Cute, led the investigation. Assistant Attorney General James Baum prosecuted the case on behalf of the State of Rhode Island.
