RIDOT, City of Warwick Address Drainage Issues on Ives Road

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will be temporarily closing a portion of the state-maintained Ives Road, between Collins Avenue and Robert Avenue in the City of Warwick, while it and the City address an ongoing drainage issue impacting the roadway surface and a few local driveways and yards. The closure is scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12, and last for approximately three days. During the closure, motorists are advised to follow a signed detour using Hale Avenue to Charlotte Drive to Hopkins Avenue.

Upon notification by the City of Warwick, who first discovered the issue while doing other work in the area, RIDOT is joining with the City to determine where the water that has been rising up through the existing pavement is coming from. If the source of the water is determined to be groundwater, RIDOT will work to install new drainage structures to capture the water and discharge it into an existing drainage system, while also restoring the roadway surface to its prior condition. If the source is determined to be coming from an existing utility line, RIDOT and the City will coordinate an appropriate repair plan.

Upon first learning of the issue, RIDOT expeditiously installed temporary steel plates at the damaged location on Ives Road to better support the roadway structure until repairs could be made.
