Raimondo Directs U.S. and Rhode Island Flags Lowered

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - In accordance with a Presidential Proclamation, Governor Gina M. Raimondo has ordered U.S. flags to be lowered until sunset on April 6, 2017 in honor of former U.S. Senator and astronaut John Glenn. Rhode Island flags will remain at half-staff until sunrise on Monday, April 10, 2017 in honor of former Rhode Island Senate President Pro Tempore William A. Walaska.

"John Glenn will be remembered as a national hero and true public servant," Raimondo said in December after his death. "His life and career taught a nation that even the impossible is attainable when we work together. His contributions have solidified America's place as a leader in science and technology, as well as inspired millions."

Raimondo also asks Rhode Islanders to lower their flags as a mark of respect.
