Secretary of State Gorbea Appoints Melissa Husband as Deputy Secretary of State/Director of Administration

PROVIDENCE, RI – Secretary of State Nellie M. Gorbea today appointed Melissa Husband as Deputy Secretary of State/Director of Administration. Husband steps into the position vacated by Melissa Long, recently confirmed as Superior Court Judge by the Rhode Island Senate.

Husband joins the RI Department of State after successfully leading the Providence Community Action Program (ProCAP) through a receivership and creating the Community Action Partnership of Providence (CAPP) in its place. She has served as an I-195 Commissioner, Public Utilities Commission Advisory Board Member, and United Way of RI Community Investment Board Member. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Roger Williams University and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Rhode Island.

"I am thrilled Melissa will be joining my team as Deputy Secretary and Director of Administration. She has years of experience in serving the community. Her experience and skills will be an asset to the public sector," Secretary Gorbea said.

"Secretary Gorbea has shown great leadership in working to make government more accessible for Rhode Islanders through the services of the Department of State," Husband said. "I am honored to have been appointed to this position and look forward to working with the staff to engage and empower Rhode Islanders as we move our great state forward."

On the departure of Long, Secretary Gorbea stated, "Melissa Long has been a devoted public servant who has decades of legal and administrative experience working to improve the lives of Rhode Islanders. I am grateful for her thoughtfulness and leadership as Deputy Secretary of State and know that our state will benefit from her temperament and deep commitment to justice."
