Traffic Advisory: Simmonsville Bridge in Johnston to Close July 9

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) today announced closure of the Simmonsville Bridge in Johnston, effective Monday, July 9. The bridge will be closed through November. It carries approximately 6,600 vehicles daily on Simmonsville Avenue over the Simmons Brook between Randall Avenue and Russo Drive.

The 70-year-old bridge will be replaced. RIDOT will also add new signing, striping, sidewalks and bridge railings and will replace a town water line under the bridge. Detouring traffic should use Plainfield Pike and Atwood Avenue.

Most construction activities are planned during daytime hours to limit possible impacts to local businesses and area residents. When the bridge reopens, the current weight limit will be lifted.

All schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.

The replacement of the Simmonsville Bridge was made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs.
