Traffic Advisory: Daytime Closures Needed for Lafayette Road in North Kingstown as Accelerated Bridge Construction Project Begins

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) today announced a series of daytime road closures for a section of Lafayette Road where it passes underneath Route 4 in North Kingstown.

Starting June 25, the closures will take place weekdays, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., ending in approximately two weeks.

The closures are part of an accelerated bridge construction approach RIDOT is using to replace this structurally deficient bridge. Among the first tasks in this $6.4 million project is the installation of steel beams on temporary supports on either side of the overpass. Lafayette Road must be closed during this work for safety.

When Lafayette Road is closed, traffic to the west of Route 4 will be directed to follow a detour using Hatchery Road Bypass to Route 2 to Route 102. Traffic to the east of Route 4 should follow Route 102 to Route 2 to Hatchery Road. Oak Hill Road and Tower Hill Road also may be used to detour around the closure.

Over the next several months, RIDOT will build new superstructure components for Route 4, avoiding any lane closures or impacts to the highway during the busy summer months. Lane closures may be needed for Lafayette Road.

The Lafayette Road Bridge carries 56,000 vehicles per day.

All construction projects are subject to changes in schedule and scope depending on needs, circumstances, findings, and weather.

The Lafayette Road Bridge project is made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs.
