Traffic Advisory Reminder: Exit 18 off I-95 South to Close Tonight at the Oxford Street Bridge Project in Providence

Tonight, Friday, June 28 at 8 p.m. through 6 a.m. Saturday morning, June 29, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will close Exit 18 (Thurbers Avenue) off I-95 South to shift all southbound lanes at the Oxford Street Bridge in Providence to the left. The current left lane shift on the northbound lanes will remain in place. On Saturday night, June 29, Exit 18 off I-95 South and the two right lanes within the project limits from Exit 19 to Exit 18, will also close from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for barrier installation.

On Sunday and Monday nights, June 30 and July 1 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Exit 18 off I-95 South and the on-ramp from Thurbers Avenue to I-95 North will close for bridge demolition. Noise is anticipated. Please follow signed detours during all closures.

RIDOT first announced these changes earlier this month as part of the $10.8 million Oxford Street Bridge rehabilitation project. The traffic patterns provide a safe work zone so crews can rapidly replace the bridge deck. They will change every two to three weeks as RIDOT installs new deck sections one lane at time. All split-lane configurations are scheduled to be complete by late September.

All construction projects are subject to changes in schedule and scope depending on needs, circumstances, findings, and weather.

The rehabilitation of the Oxford Street Bridge is made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs.
