Governor Announces Date for Tree Lighting Ceremony, Unveils New State House Christmas Tree

PROVIDENCE, RI- Governor Gina M. Raimondo is inviting all Rhode Islanders to view the State House's beautiful new Christmas tree at this year's Tree Lighting celebration. The festivities will take place this Wednesday, December 4 at 5:00 p.m. Governor Raimondo, First Gentleman Andy Moffit and their kids will light the Christmas Tree at 6:15 p.m.

This year's Christmas Tree, an 18-foot artificial tree from Balsam Hill, is currently on display at the State House. The tree was purchased with remaining funds from the 2017 NGA conference and will be available for future governors to use.

"Rhode Island's perennial challenges with the State House Christmas tree have been well-documented," said Governor Gina M. Raimondo. "Due to conditions inside the State House, it's challenging to keep a real tree alive and thriving from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day. I want Rhode Islanders to be able to enjoy the State House Christmas decorations—especially the tree—for the entirety of the holiday season."

After the tree is lit, the Governor and First Gentleman will read "The Night Before Christmas." This year's celebration will feature performances from the LaSalle Academy Concert Chorus, "The Governor's Own" 88th Army Band, and the Scandinavian Women's Chorus of Rhode Island. There also will be crafts for the kids. As always, Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus will be visiting the State House from the North Pole.

Attendees are asked to bring an unwrapped toy to "Fill a Cruiser" with the Rhode Island State Police. Toys will be donated to a variety of local charities for distribution to local kids in need.
