I-95 Lane Closures in Pawtucket Likely to Cause Delays; Drivers Should Use I-295 to Avoid Delay

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) recommends that travelers on I-95 North and South during daytime hours consider alternate routes because of lane closures planned on the highway as it passes through Pawtucket starting Thursday, April 23. I-295 and Route 146 can be used during this work to avoid congestion and delays.

RIDOT is rehabilitating the Broadway bridge over I-95 near Exit 29, and as part of the process will be sandblasting paint off the bridge's beams. This will require the closure of up to two lanes in either direction of I-95 for approximately two weeks, Monday-Sunday, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Although traffic volumes are reduced because of the coronavirus crisis, RIDOT still expects that closing two lanes during the daytime at this spot will cause traffic back-ups. The highway is only three lanes wide along this part of I-95, so only one lane will be open to traffic.

Work on the Broadway overpass is part of a $13.7 million bridge preservation project for 11 bridges in Pawtucket and Providence. The work consists of replacing bridge joints, performing concrete repairs, repairing sidewalks and railings, and repaving.

All construction projects are subject to changes in schedule and scope depending on needs, circumstances, findings, and weather.

The Bridge Group 03 – I-95 project is made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs.
