PROVIDENCE, RI – Secretary of State Nellie M. Gorbea is reminding Rhode Islanders that they have until Sunday, May 3, to register to vote or update their voter information for the June 2 Presidential Primary. Rhode Islanders can check their voter registration status by using the Department of State's Voter Information Center. Eligible residents can register to vote in three ways:
1) Go online to vote.ri.gov.
2) Download a voter registration form and submit it to their local board of canvassers by May 3.
3) Drop off a voter registration form at the location listed for their community at the bottom of this release.
"Every one of us has a role to play in preserving our democracy during this unprecedented time," said Secretary Gorbea. "I am committed to making sure that all eligible voters can make their voices heard in a safe and secure manner during this and every election cycle."
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Presidential Primary on June 2 will be a predominantly mail ballot election. All registered voters will receive a mail ballot application. If you are a registered voter and do not receive a mail ballot application by May 1, visit vote.ri.gov or contact the Department of State's Elections Division at 401-222-2340 or elections@sos.ri.gov. Newly registered voters will receive a mail ballot application along with an acknowledgment notice from their local board of canvassers confirming the voter's registration.
For voters who cannot vote by mail and need to vote in person, please know there will be fewer polling places open. The number and locations of polling places will be determined by the Rhode Island Board of Elections.
Another important date for voters to be aware of – May 4 is the deadline for registered voters to disaffiliate from their political party prior to the Presidential Primary. Rhode Island has a semi-closed primary, which allows unaffiliated voters to vote in either party primary being held on June 2. Registered Democrat and Republican voters can vote only in their own party's primary.
Voters looking to disaffiliate from a party or change their party affiliation must do so before the May 4 deadline. This update can be done online using the Department of State's Voter Information Center at vote.ri.gov. Voters can also change their party affiliation by downloading a voter registration form and either mailing or delivering it to their local board of canvassers. Disaffiliations must be received by 4 p.m. on May 4.
