Mollis Reminds Businesses They Have One Week Left to Register "Voters in the Workplace"

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- (Sept. 26, 2008) -- Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis is reminding businesses owners they have just one week left to host voter registration drives before the Oct. 4 deadline for registering to vote in November's election.

In the month since launching his "Voters in the Workplace" campaign, Mollis has scheduled nearly two dozen voter registration drives. The upcoming week includes stops at Butler Hospital, the Rhode Island Blood Center and Blue Cross Blue Shield.

"We want to make it easier for Rhode Islanders to register. Taking voter registration to the factory floor, the office and Main Street is simply another way to respond to the needs of our citizens," said Mollis.

Bank of America, Cox Communications and TACO are among the companies that already have hosted "Voters in the Workplace" voter registration drives. They encouraged their workforce to register through broadcast email, posters, flyers and their Intranet sites.

In addition to targeting first-time voters, the drives give registered voters who have moved or changed their names a convenient way to update their records as required by state law.

In order to register, you must turn 18 years of age by Nov. 4, be a U.S. citizen, be a resident of Rhode Island and have a valid social security number or Rhode Island driver’s license. Registering to vote is free.

Companies that are interested in hosting voter registration drives in the workplace should contact Chris Barnett at (401) 222-4293 or cbarnett@sec.state.ri.us.
