Lt. Gov. Roberts to Oppose Rate Hikes at Health Insurance Public Forum

Lt. Gov. to Ask Insurance Commissioner to “Draw Line in the Sand” on Rate Hikes

PROVIDENCE— Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts will oppose rate hikes before Health Insurance Commissioner Christopher Koller at a public forum on proposed commercial health insurance rate increases MONDAY, June 15 at the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission in Warwick. The office of the Health Insurance Commissioner is extending the open comment period, which was to have closed on June 5, 2009, and is soliciting input from the public at the forum.

Lt. Gov. Roberts has joined business leaders to voice opposition to the proposed rate hikes, calling them “unacceptable, unaffordable and unrealistic.” In a letter to Commissioner Koller urging him to reject the proposed rate filings, she calls on all involved to hold the line on any rate hikes until the underlying costs of health care have been addressed.
