RI.gov Wins National eGovernment Award for Department of Environmental Management Online Service

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – August 20, 2009 – Rhode Island’s official Web site and service provider, RI.gov, was recently named a 2009 Best Fit Integrator by the Center for Digital Government, a national research and advisory institute on information technology policies and best practices in state and local government. The award recognizes state information technology partners whose solutions proved exceptional in areas such as cost savings, consolidation, and public access.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) nominated partner RI.gov for the online agriculture product renewal service, which RI.gov developed and hosts for DEM. The service, launched in 2008, offers agriculture manufacturers a simple, convenient online process for product registration renewals. The online service reduced renewal processing time at DEM from months to weeks, saving hundreds of hours previously devoted to product data entry. Also, the online service spares reams of paper once used in the mailed renewal packages, as well as dollars spent mailing packages between manufacturers and DEM.

“We see in these winning projects how collaboration in solving digital problems is so vital to the modernization of government and we congratulate NIC for the excellent solutions it has created for its public sector partners,” said Cathilea Robinett, executive director of the Center for Digital Government.

RI.gov is a subsidiary of the eGovernment firm NIC, based in Olathe, Kansas. Services from NIC-managed state portals in Maine, Montana, Tennessee and Utah were also recognized as Integrator Awards winners. Harry Herington, NIC chairman and CEO, attended the Sonoma, California awards ceremony on August 2 on behalf of all NIC winners.

“To be nominated by our partners and receive this award from the Center is a tremendous privilege,” said Harry Herington, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of NIC. “At NIC we strive to be the best partner government has ever worked with and for our partners to recognize that dedication is a great honor.”
